  • Bachelor Award: On November 24, 2017, Edgar Tretschk has been awarded for his bachelor studies in computer science. His thesis on "Variational Pansharpening with Nonlinear Anisotropic Diffusion" was written in our group.

  • Computer Science Teaching Award: On October 16, 2017, a Busy Beaver Teaching Award of the computer science students has been given to Pascal Peter for his class on "Image Compression".

  • 2017 Rothschild Distinguished Visiting Fellow: During September 2017, Joachim Weickert was a Rothschild Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, located at the University of Cambridge (UK).

  • Ph.D. Defence: On June 16, 2017, Sebastian Hoffmann has defended his Ph.D. thesis on "Competitive Image Compression with Linear PDEs". Prof. Gerlind Plonka-Hoch (University of Göttingen) was external committee member.

  • Computer Science Teaching Award: On April 18, 2017, a Busy Beaver Teaching Award of the computer science students has been given to Joachim Weickert for his class on "Mathematics for Computer Scientists III".

  • ERC Advanced Grant: Joachim Weickert has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant for his proposal "INCOVID: Inpainting-based Compression of Visual Data". This prestigious grant by the European Research Council (ERC) provides funding of up to 2.46 million Euro over a period of five years. It supports our research on a new generation of methods for compressing images and videos more efficiently.

  • Maria Petrou Prize for Invariance in Computer Vision: At the British Machine Vision Conference 2013 (BMVC 2013, Sept. 9-13, 2013, Bristol, UK), Oliver Demetz, David Hafner, and Joachim Weickert have received the Maria Petrou Prize for Invariance in Computer Vision for their paper "The Complete Rank Transform: A Tool for Accurate and Morphologically Invariant Matching of Structures". In total, 439 papers have been submitted.

  • Conference Organisation: Joachim Weickert was the general chair of the 35th German Conference on Pattern Recognition (GCPR 2013, September 3-6, 2013, Saarbrücken, Germany). The proceedings have appeared in Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science.

  • Press Coverage: Our visual computing activities that are inspired from phenomena in nature are covered in the magazine c't. With more than 1 million readers, c't is one of the most influential computer magazines in Germany.

  • Keynote Talk: Joachim Weickert has given a keynote talk at Computer Graphics International 2013 (CGI 2013, June 12-14, 2013, Hannover, Germany), one of the oldest conferences on computer graphics.

  • Ph.D. Defence: On May 29, 2013 Sven Grewenig has defended his Ph.D. thesis on "Fast Explicit Methods for PDE-based Image Analysis". Prof. Tobias Preusser (Jacobs University, Bremen, Germany) was external committee member.

  • Reviewer Award: Andrés Bruhn was awarded for his outstanding reviews at the Tenth Asian Conference on Computer Vision (ACCV 2010, Queenstown, New Zealand, November 8-12, 2010).

  • Open Source Library: For our award-winning work on fast explicit diffusion (FED) algorithms we have released an open source library. It allows to speed up existing explicit schemes by several orders of magnitude.

  • Junior Research Group: As of October 1, 2010, Andrés Bruhn heads his own junior reseach group Vision and Image Processing within the Multimodal Computing and Interaction Cluster of Excellence.

  • Best Paper Award: On September 24, 2010, Sven Grewenig, Joachim Weickert, and Andrés Bruhn have received the Best Paper Award at the DAGM 2010 Conference for their paper "From Box Filtering to Fast Explicit Diffusion".

  • Technical Committee: On September 23, 2010 Joachim Weickert has been elected to the Technical Committee of the German Association for Pattern Recognition (DAGM).

  • Two Keynote Lectures: Joachim Weickert has given the opening and closing keynote lectures at the 2010 Irish Machine Vision and Image Processing Conference (IMVIP 2010, September 8-10, 2010, Limerick).

  • Area Chair: Joachim Weickert has served as area chair for the Eleventh Europan Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV 2010, September 5-11, 2010, Heraklion, Greece).

  • Full Professor Position: On September 2, 2010 Thomas Brox (Berkeley) has been appointed full professor at the University of Freiburg where he heads the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing Group. Between 2002 and 2005 he was a Ph.D. student in our group.

  • Keynote Lecture: Joachim Weickert has given a keynote lecture at the Fourth International Workshop on Biomedical Image Registration (July 11-13, 2010, Lübeck).

  • Lecturer Position: On April 1, 2010 Martin Welk has accepted a permanent position as a university lecturer for biomedical image analysis at the University for Medical Informatics and Technology in Hall (Austria).

  • Declined Professorship: On March 19, 2010, Joachim Weickert has declined an offer for a full professorship for image processing and data analysis at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern.

  • Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize: On March 15, 2010 Joachim Weickert has been awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The Leibniz Prize is the most prestigeous science award in Germany and includes up to 2.5 million Euro in research funds.

  • Dissertation Award: On October 22, 2007, Andrés Bruhn received the Dr. Eduard Martin Prize for an outstanding dissertation. This prize is given anually by the Vereinigung der Freunde der Universität des Saarlandes to the best Ph.D. student of each faculty.

  • Paper Award: At the 2005 Annual Symposium of the German Pattern Recognition Society (August 30 - September 2, 2005, Vienna, Austria), a paper award has been given to Natalia Slesareva, Andrés Bruhn, and Joachim Weickert for their paper "Optic Flow Goes Stereo: A Variational Method for Estimating Discontinuity-Preserving Dense Disparity Maps".

  • Invited Talk: Joachim Weickert was an invited speaker at the Conference on PDE-Based Image Processing and Related Inverse Problems (Oslo, Norway, August 8-12, 2005).

  • Founding of the MIA Group: The Mathematical Image Analysis Group has been established on December 1, 2001. Founding members were Andrés Bruhn and Joachim Weickert. In the next half a year five new members have joined: Thomas Brox, Bernhard Burgeth, Christian Feddern, Pavel Mrázek, and Martin Welk.
