In response to the need for a robust and flexible bottom-up process in computer vision which also allows top-down interactions, we propose the use of nonlinear anisotropic diffusion scale-spaces. This paper explains the basic idea behind these scale-spaces, their adaptation to the underlying image structure by means of the structure tensor, and it presents a numerical algorithm. In order to demonstrate the flexibility of this approach, we then design a filter for making trabecular bone structures in medical images explicit. We also show how the concept of coherence-enhancing anisotropic diffusion can be extended to arbitrary dimensional data sets.
