J. Weickert, The modelling of napkins, F. Hodnett (Ed.), Proc. Sixth European Conf. on Mathematics in Industry, Teubner, Stuttgart, 297-300, 1992.
The behaviour of Ultra napkins is investigated by a mathematical model focusing on liquid transport within the cellulose and liquid exchange between cellulose and granules of a superabsorbent. The model ends up with a nonlinear PDE strongly coupled with an ODE. Numerically this system is treated by means of a symmetric time splitting, leading to pure diffusion and pure exchange processes. While the exchange equation can be solved analytically, an ADI-predictor-corrector method is applied to the diffusion equation. The resultant computer programme can be used to propose impoved napkins with inhomogeneous granule distributions.
